Rudolf married Princess Princess Stéphanie of Belgium on the 10 May 1881 and they had one daughter, Elisabeth Marie who was born in 1883. However, in 1889 Rudolf, who had separated from his wife, killed both himself and his mistress Baroness Marie Vetsera in an apparent suicide pact in a hunting lodge in Baden that he had purchased in 1887.
