  • Photograph of Princess Elizabeth of Hesse standing in three-quarters length. She holds onto an assemblage of wood designed as a rusticated studio prop within a photographer's studio and looks directly at the viewer.

Princess Elisabeth was the second child of Princess Alice, the second daughter of Queen Victoria. Her father was Louis, Prince of Hesse who went on to become Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine. Elizabeth was born at Bessungen in Hesse, Germany and was the Prince Louis' second child. She married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovitch in June 1884 at the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, Russia. Following her husband's murder on the 18 February 1905, Elisabeth herself was murdered on the 17 July 1918 by being thrown down a disused mine shaft in Siniachikha, Russia. The Grand Duchess's remains were later recovered and now they are interred in the Church of Maria Magdalene in Jerusalem.
