Grand Duke Nicholas was born in the Alexander Palace, Tsarskoye, St Petersburg in 1868. His father was Alexander III of Russia and his mother, Maria Feodorovna. In November of 1894, two significant events occurred in the life of Nicholas; at the age of 26, he succeeded his father as Emperor of Russia and he wed Princess Alix of Hesse at the Grand Church of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg.
