Photograph of Prince Friedrich of Hesse and by Rhine in a full length portrait. The Prince is seated and faces three-quarters to the right. He wears a lace collar around his neck and dress with buttons down the centre. He is aged approximately 1 year.

Friedrich was born on the 7th October 1870 in New Palace, Darmstadt, but died at the age of two on the 29th May 1873, after falling from a window. When this photograph was taken, Friedrich had not reached the age when he was 'breeched' or was wearing trousers, which was common practice for boys in the west.
