Photograph of Isma'il Pasha who stands with his left arm resting on the back of a chair. The Khedive faces three-quarters to the right. He wears a fez hat and a watch fob hangs from his waistcoat.
The Khedive was responsible for the modernization of Egypt which ultimately led to his country being placed in debt. Ismail Pasha relinquished his power when he sold Egypt's financial stake in the Suez Canal to the British in 1875.
