Photograph of Charlotte of Belgium, who became Empress of Mexico when her husband was declared Emperor in 1864. She stands in three-quarters length and faces the viewer. She wears a garland of flowers in her hair.
Charlotte was the daughter of King Leopold of the Belgians and in 1857, married Archduke Maximilian of Austria. She never came to terms with her husband's execution by the Mexican Government when he was overthrown and died of influenza in 1927. -
