Daguerreotype of King Mongkut of Siam, also known as Rama IV, sitting on a throne with a canopy overhead. He holds a ceremonial staff in his right hand and rests his left hand on the arm of the throne. He is wearing heavy jewellery and a tall conical hat, which have been painted over in gold. The daguerreotype has oxidised around the edges.

King Mongkut was the fourth monarch of Siam (now Thailand), and reigned from 1851 to 1868. He spent his young adulthood as a Buddist monk before beginning a reign which was known for its modernisation. This is one of two daguerreotypes which were presented to Queen Victoria in November 1857. A carbon photograph taken from the daguerreotype is held in the collection (RCIN 2931755.d).
