In 1854, the partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay were commissioned by Prince Albert to document the construction of the new Balmoral castle and to record the 'old palace' prior to its demolition in 1856. In January the following year, the partnership was dissolved when Hay left to attend to the ailing J & J Hay family business.
