Photograph of the old Balmoral castle with building works for the new castle alongside. The old building displays an amalgamation of architectural styles, typical of the Scots baronial style, that were implemented under Lord Aberdeen's tenancy during the 1830's. In the foreground stands the central part of the house featuring large, bay windows with a glass conservatory to the left. Craig Gowan dominates the background behind the castle.
In 1854, the partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay were commissioned by Prince Albert to document the construction of the new Balmoral castle and to record the 'old palace' prior to its demolition in 1856. In January the following year, the partnership was dissolved when Hay left to attend to the ailing J & J Hay family business. -
