Colin was the son of Admiral Sir Henry Keppel and trained on HMS Sultan. During his career he was Extra-Equerry to four kings from Edward VII to George VI, and Equerry to Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Queen Victoria's son) between 1885 and 1893. In 1911 he commanded RMS Medina, conveying King George V and Queen Mary on their tour of India
