  • A studio photograph of Oliver George Paulet Montagu. It is a short half-length profile portrait, with a thick, slightly drooping mustache.

After his military career with the Royal Horse Guards, Montagu was made Equerry to Edward Albert, Prince of Wales on his tour of Egypt in 1869, and remained in his service until his untimely death from cancer in January 1893, in the same month as the entirely unexpected death of Prince Albert Victor. Queen Alexandra was particularly fond of Montagu, so the death of both her son and Montagu was a double blow from which she struggled to recover. He was an outwardly loud and bumptious person but had a softer religious side. One of the many things he did for Alexandra was to compile an album of photographs documenting their visit to Russia for the wedding of the Duke of Edinburgh to Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, in 1874 (RCINs 2933773-2933830 and 2945138-2945142).
