Signed by the sitter. Stephenson was a career naval officer and artic explorer, when he commanded HMS Discovery for the British Arctic Expedition of 1875–6, led by George Strong Nares in HMS Alert. He also served in China, the Mediterrenean and Egypt. His final position was Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in 1904 and Extra Equerry to King Edward VII.
