A photograph of Hugh Sutlej Gough (1848-1920), then Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel, of the 10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own). It is a three-quarters length portrait, standing and holding gloves. He is in full-dress uniform which consists of a highly braided tunic with aiguillette over a decorative chest-belt, and highly embroidered sleeves. His busby with white plume is on the plinth beside him.
Sutlej is the name of an important river in India and also the site of a major battle during the first Anglo-Sikh War about 1846. It is possible that this Hugh Sutlej Gough was related to Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough, Commander-in-Chief in India during the 1840s; hence his unusual middle name. He was born in Simla in India and died in Caernarvonshire, after a long military career, seeing service in India, Afghanistan and Jersey, as Lieutenant-Governor of the Jersey.
