Photograph of Princess Victoria with her sister Princess Maud and Prince Carl of Denmark, in fancy dress for the Devonshire House Ball, 2 July 1897.
Prince Carl or Charles of Denmark, later King Haakon VII of Norway was dressed as a 16th century Danish courtier and wore a black and lilac silk doublet, hose and plumed cap. Both Princesses were dressed as ladies of the court of Marguerite of Valois (their mother was dressed as Queen Marguerite). Princess Maud's glittering pink dress had applique patterns made of a transparent fabric in silk and silver thread, embroidered with glass and silver bead, silver sequins and diamante. Her costume is still in the Norwegian royal collection. Princess Victoria’s dress was gold.
