Group photograph taken during the wedding celebrations of Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse (1868-1937) and Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1876-1936). Standing from left to right are Tsesarevich Nicholas (1868-1918), later Nicholas II, Princess Alix of Hesse (1872-1918), later Alexandra Feodorovna, Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine (1863-1950) and Ernest Louis. Seated from left to right are Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine (1866-1953), Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna (1864-1918), Princess Victoria Melita and Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (1857-1905). There is a marble staircase behind them. Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha married in April 1894 at the Ehrenburg Palace in Coburg. During the wedding celebrations Princess Alix of Hesse, the youngest surviving sister of Ernest Louis, became engaged to Tsesarevich Nicholas. After the wedding Tsesarevich Nicholas went to stay with Princess Alix and her family at the Neues Palais in Darmstadt, where this photograph was taken.
