This photograph was taken in front of Barton Manor (adjacent to Osborne House) and records what would be the last visit of the imperial Russian family to Britain. The Tsar and the Prince of Wales, later King George V, are seen here next to each other’s firstborn son and future heir. Looking at the photograph with today’s eyes though, the viewer may encounter a certain haunting aura, knowing that only one of the sitters would eventually be able to thoroughly fulfil his duties as monarch.
