Alexandra, Princess of Wales and Princess Dagmar of Denmark Oct 1863
-
A carte-de-visite photograph of Princess Alexandra, Prince of Wales (1844-1925) with her sister Princess Dagmar of Denmark, later Empress Maria Feodorovna (1847-1928). This was taken in a photographic studio with a painted back-drop of a column and a stained-glass window, with Alexandra playing the piano, while Dagmar is about to turn the music sheet over. Alexandra wears a summer mantle with wide-cut sleeves and trimmed with applied bands of machine-made lace, over a pale dress.
This photograph, and others with Princess Alexandra's family, was taken to commemorate the Danish royal family's visit to London. Four months previously, the Princesses' older brother Prince Wilhelm became King George I of the Hellenes, and about a month later, their father became King Christian IX of Denmark.Provenance
