A page from an album documenting Queen Alexandra's visit to Athens from 2nd to 9th May 1905, to see her brother King George I of the Hellenes and the extended Greek royal family. It has eight photographs, two hand-written documents with seating plan and list of guests for the State Dinner in Athens on 3rd May 1904, a handwritten menu with signatures, and two coloured postcards of the Acropolis in Athens and Greek bodyguards in uniform (k and m). The first three photographs (a-c) of the palace gardens and city are concealed under a folder sheet on 'AE' headed paper with a list of guests (i), annotated by Queen Alexandra and another hand. The second document shows the seating plans for the State Dinner (j). The menu (l) has signatures of 'Willy' and 'Olga' - King George I and Queen Olga of the Hellenes.
The other photographs (d-h) are of the Greek royal family, including Constantine, Duke of Sparta, later King Constantine I (in uniform with bicycle), Princess Nina of Russia and Prince Paul of Greece (standing together, cousins), and other small children with a nanny, and King George I of the Hellenes, standing by a plinth, all taken in the gardens of the royal palace.
There is another menu or document under the photograph of King George I (h) and the coloured postcard (m) but no longer visible, which suggests that the photograph of King George I and postcard were placed here at a later date.
Queen Alexandra wrote a caption (to be found under the document with the seating plans): 'Delighted to be here once more. Walked with Willy in my lovely gardens of Paradise as I call it, where all orange roses and [illegible] were in full bloom...all the dear little grandchildren in the gardens'.
From a blue leather bound album stamped with 'Vol.1 Mediterranean Cruise, 1905' with Queen Alexandra's cypher on top left corner of the album. -
