Photograph of Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, India. The building features a classical façade with a crescent containing a domed building. On the roofline to the left of the building is the Royal crest. A canon stands on a plinth at the front with lawns in the foreground. Raj Bhavan, formerly known as Government House in Calcutta was built in 1799 by the 1st Marquess of Wellesley (1760-1842) who was the then Governor General of India. It was completed in 1803 and was the official residence of the Viceroy of India until 1911 when it became the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. It is now the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal.
