Albumen print on card | 14.4 x 19.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2915348

  • Photograph of Ismail Pasha Yousri, Governor of Alexandria; seated with a hookah to his right against a studio backdrop of palm trees and pyramids. Signed on verso 'HRH Prince George of Wales from Ismail Yousry Pasha, 1882'.

Prince Albert Victor and Prince George (late King George V) entered the navy in 1877 as cadets on the training ship HMS Britannia. Between 1879 and 1882 the princes embarked on a three-year world voyage, accompanied by their tutor John Neale Dalton, on HMS Bacchante, serving as midshipmen. According to the two-volume published account of the cruise, purportedly based on the diaries of the young princes, Sir Edward Malet and Ismail Pasha Yousri were in attendance on the princes during their stay in Egypt in March 1882 (The Cruise of Her Majesty's Ship 'Bacchante.' 1879-1882, vol. 2, 1886, p. 364).
