A hand-coloured photograph of Prrincess Marie as a baby, with her back turned, wearing a white dress with pink ribbons. Vignette. Babies were sometimes photographed in different positions, as a record for prosperity and for the benefit of relatives.
Princess Marie 'May' was the youngest child of Prince Ludwig and Princess Alice of Hesse, and was the first child in the Hesse family to die when the diphtheria disease broke out in the Household, on 15 November 1878. Her mother Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's third child, died a month later.
From a blue velvet bound album with gold coloured metal corners, with a watercolour of flowers by Princess Louise, set into front cover. -
