Lady Balfour was one of the highest-ranking member of the British aristocracy to lead an important group in the Suffrage movement, becoming leader of the National Society for Women's Suffrage from 1896 to 1914. Early in childhood she suffered from a hip-joint disability and walked with a limp. Her oldest brother John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne married Princess Louise, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Later she married Eustace Balfour but the marriage was problematic due to his alcoholism and Conservative political beliefs, disagreeing with women's suffrage.
