-
A hand-coloured photograph of Lady Lucy Caroline Cavendish, wife of Lord Frederick Cavendish, pictured seated and reading a book. Only the flowers on the table are painted, the rest is un-touched.
Lady Lucy Cavendish was a pioneer in women's education. Before that, she was Maid-in-Honour to Queen Victoria until her marriage in 1864. On the day that her husband was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, on 6 May 1882, he was murdered by Irish republicans. Afterwards she was active in women's education; for which the Lucy Cavendish College, in Cambridge was named in her honour in 1965.
From a blue velvet bound album with gold coloured metal corners which has a watercolour of flowers by Princess Louise, set into the front cover. -
