Watts was a popular English Victorian painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement.  Watts was intimately involved in the Prinsep set of bohemians, including Julia Margaret Cameron (he sat for her on several different occasions, see RCIN 2941861), an important photographer. He was probably the most influential person in developing and encouraging her thoughts and ideas on art and photography.  Watts was first married to Ellen Terry, but the marriage was short-lived. He later he married Mary Fraser Tytler when he was aged 69. The couple moved to Compton, near Guildford in Surrey. They built a house there called Limnerslease and established the Watts Gallery. There is a charming portrait by Watts in the Royal Collection of Mary Augusta, Lady Holland (RCIN 407170).
