Real photo postcard of a three-quarter length portrait of Princess Alexandra, later 2nd Duchess of Fife (1891-1959) and Princess Maud, later Countess of Southesk (1893-1945). Princess Alexandra stands on the left of the postcard, facing halfway to the right with her head turned towards the camera. She gazes left, away from the camera. She holds a small posy of flowers in her right hand. Princess Maud is seated, facing three-quarters to the right. She turns her head to face the camera and gazes to the right. The sisters wear matching mourning dress of a dark colour, long sleeve dress and a simple pearl necklace, possibly to mark the death of King Edward VII.
The postcard was sent to Queen Alexandra, 'For darling Granny', on the occasion of her birthday. -
