A photograph of Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864-92), with Princess Mary of Teck (1867-1953), taken in December 1891 to commemorate their engagement, at Windsor Castle. A three-quarters length portrait, both standing and linking arms, while the Princess holds a pair of gloves in her other hands. Signed 'Eddy' by the Prince (his family name) and Princess Mary, for Christmas 1891. Roughly cut down.
After the engagement was announced, Princess Mary, her parents and brothers, went to Windsor Castle on the evening of 10 December 1891, and they all stayed for two days. During that time, Prince Albert Victor and Princess Mary were photographed by Hills & Saunders, at the castle. Sadly, Prince Albert Victor caught flu at Christmas, and died of pneumonia on 14 January 1892, at Sandringham, while plans for his forthcoming marriage and his appointment as Viceroy of Ireland were under way. Princess Mary eventually married his brother Prince George, Duke of York, later King George V. -
