Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe, 7th Baron Calthorpe (1831-1912) joined the 8th Hussars, and during the Crimean War, served as Aide-de-Camp to Lord Raglan. He subsequently was appointed as Lieutenant-Colonel in 1861 with command of the 5th Dragoon Guards. In 1857, Calthorpe published 'Letters from Headquarters' which a few years later was to become the subject of a legal battle with Lord Cardigan. -
