Hyem was born in 1842/3 in Leyton, Essex and is recorded in the 1871 and 1881 Census reports, living at no. 3 St Mark's Road, Windsor, with his wife Ellen and six children by 1881. By 1891 he had moved with his famiily to the King's Road in Chelsea and then to Leytonstone.
