A carte-de-visite photograph of Prince Christian Victor of Schleswig-Holstein, as an Oxford student. A half-length portrait, facing the viewer, wearing a mortar-board and gown over a tweed suit. Vignette. The original Indian tissue folder imprinted with the photographers' logo still survives.
Prince Christian Victor was the favourite child of Princess Helena and grandson of Queen Victoria, and an excellent cricketer. He was one of the first royals to attend school and attended Lambrook and Wellington College in Berkshire and Magdalen College, Oxford. He completed his military training at Royal Military College, Sandhurst before joining the army and serving in parts of the British Empire and the Second Boer War. In October 1900 he caught malaria and died of enteric fever. He is buried in Pretoria cemetery, South Africa. -
