Carte-de-visite of Prince Christian Victor of Schleswig-Holstein, sitting on top of an object on a chair with a scrolled frame, looking sideways. He is wearing a jacket with military style cuffs and trims, hands tucked into the pockets, over a smock which would have been worn by all boys under the age of 5, and a hat with a flower or pom-pom.
Prince Christian was the favourite child of Princess Helena and grandson of Queen Victoria, and an excellent cricketer. He was educated at Lambrook, Wellington College and Magdalen College, Oxford; one of the first royals to attend school; He completed his military training at Royal Military College, Sandhurst before joining the army and serving in parts of the British Empire and the Second Boer War. In October 1900 he caught malaria and died of enteric fever. He is buried in Pretoria cemetery, South Africa. -
