Elisabeth was the daughter of Prince Hermann of Wied and Princess Marie of Nassau. In 1869 she married Prince Karl of Romania, formerly Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and the couple had one daughter Marie, who died in 1874 at the age of three.
