-
Carte-de-visite full length photograph of Princess Marie, Grand Duchess of Hesse. The subject is shown in three quarter view, facing towards the left of the image. She is seated on a banquette covered with a patterned silk cloth and her feet are resting on a footstool. Behind her, on the right of the scene is a palm plant. Marie's fair hair is curled and decorated with a ribbon hairband. She is wearing a string of pearls around her neck. She is wearing a pale coloured off-the-shoulder dress, trimmed with gathered lace and ribbons. She places her right hand on the banquette and her left hand in her lap. She is wearing ankle socks and dark coloured leather shoes decorated with rosettes.
Marie was the youngest daughter of Princess Alice and Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse. In 1878 she died of diphtheria at the age of four and was buried with her mother, who died a few weeks later of the same disease.Provenance
