-
Carte-de-visite three quarter length double portrait of the Prince and Princess of Saxe Coburg, shown from a frontal viewpoint. Prince Philipp (1844-1921) stands on the right of the scene, and Princess Louise (1858-1924) stands on the left. They are pictured arm in arm. The prince has wavy hair, a full beard and moustache and wears pince-nez. He is wearing a white shirt with a turn down collar, mid-coloured trousers, a mid-coloured silk cravat and a dark coloured double-breasted frock coat. Princess Louise's hair is braided and arranged in a chignon and she is wearing drop earrings. She is holding a bouquet of flowers in her right hand, in front of her body. She is wearing a pale coloured gown with a tiered skirt, trimmed with lace.
Philipp was the eldest son of August, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Clémentine of Orleans. In 1875 he married his second cousin Louise, daughter of Leopold II, King of the Belgians and the couple had two children.Provenance
