She is standing with both hands resting on top of the back of a carved wooden chair. Her hair is arranged in a chignon and decorated with a ribbon. She is wearing a pale coloured dress with a high neck, trimmed with tiers of gathered ribbon and lace. She is wearing drop earrings, a brooch at her neck and a ring on the third finger of her right hand.

Marie was the only surviving child of Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and his wife Princess Agnes of Anhalt-Dessau. Her younger brother Georg died as an infant.

In 1873 Marie married Prince Albert of Prussia and the couple had three sons.
