Carte-de-visite full length portrait of Elizabeth, Queen Dowager of Prussia. The subject is shown in three quarter view, facing towards the right of the image, her head turned to face the viewer. The studio setting is reminiscent of a bourgeois interior with a painted trompe l'oeil background depicting classical columns and a mantelpiece that supports various statuettes and ornaments. The subject is seated in an upholstered armchair, her hands placed in her lap. Her hair is arranged in two braided chignons on either side of her head. She is wearing an elaborate headscarf, decorated with flowers and a geometric pattern. She is wearing a dark coloured silk dress with a full skirt and crinoline, trimmed at the shoulders and cuffs with lace.
Elizabeth was the daughter of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and his Queen, Friederike Karoline Wilhelmine Margravine of Baden. She was the identical twin sister of Amelie, Queen Dowager of Saxony.
In 1823 she married the future King Frederick William IV of Prussia.Provenance
