In 1844 the Archduke married Hildegard Luise Friederike (1825-1895) and they had three children: Karl Albrecht Ludwig (1847-1848), Maria Theresia Anna (1845-1927) and Mathilde Marie Adelgunde (1849-1867). Mathilde died in tragic circumstances when her evening dress caught fire as she was trying to hide a cigarette she was smoking from her father.
