Carte-de-visite depicting a family group portrait of Prince Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine (1837-92), and Princess Alice (1843-78), with their three eldest daughters. Prince Ludwig is standing and faces the viewer. He is holding Princess Irene (1866-1953) in his arms. Princess Alice is sitting on the right of the photograph, looking down. Princess Victoria (1863-1950) is standing in front of her father and faces her mother. Her left hand is placed on the right shoulder of Princess Alice. Princess Elisabeth (1864-1918) is sitting on a stool on the left of the photograph, facing three-quarters right.
