Ernest Augustus was the son of George V and Queen Marie of Hanover, and the great-grandson of George III of the United Kingdom. He became the Crown Prince of Hanover in November 1851. In 1878 he married Princess Thyra of Denmark, a sister of the Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra.
