Photograph of a group photograph comprising of approximately ninety-four subjects who were survivors of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, taken at the British Agency soon after their arrival there. Headmen sit at the front and Henry Stanley (1841-1904) stands in the centre wearing a hat.
In 1886, the noted explorer and adventurer, Henry M Stanley was commissioned by King Leopold II of Belgium to rescue the then governor of Equatoria, Emin Pasha (1840-92) following the growing threat that was posed to the governor from Mahdist forces. Some four years later and having navigated the previously uncharted Ituri rainforest, Stanley returned with Pasha and the surviving members of the relief expedition. Disaster struck again in December 1889, when Emin Pasha sustained an injury to his skull when he fell from a Balcony during a celebratory dinner in Zanzibar (now Tanzania), possibly where this photograph was taken.Provenance
