-
Photograph from an album of a full length group portrait. On the front row are (left to right): Sir Steuart Bayley (1836-1925); Lady Dufferin; Lord Connemara (1827-1902); The Viceroy of India, Frederick Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Dufferin (1826-1902); Lady Susan Georgiana Bourke, Baroness Connemara (d. 1898); Lady Helen Blackwood and Lady Eva Wyndham Quin.
In the back row stands Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel William Hamilton Broun (1854-1937) who was previously known as Briggs. Dr Broun was the personal medical officer to Robert Bourke, 1st Baron Connemara, Governor of Madras.
The portrait includes thirty-one sitters all of whom are positioned in front of a large building, probably Raj Bhavan (then known as Government House), Kolkata, together with officers of the Indian Army.
Lord Connemara was Governor of Madras 1886-90. The Times (February 6 1888, p. 6) reported that Lord and Lady Connemara were visiting the Viceroy in Kolkata in early February 1888, and that during a Chapter of the Order of the Indian Empire held on 4 February, Lord Connemara was invested as a Knight Grand Commander. This photograph may have been taken during that visit.Provenance
