Photograph of John Simpson, the gardener at Corbie Hall, and his wife Mrs Simpson seated side by side outside on a bench that is placed in the middle of a pathway. Mrs Simpson has her hands on her lap, and Mr Simpson has his arms folded. Both face the viewer. Queen Victoria made a number of visits to see Mr and Mrs Simpson in their home at Corbie Hall. On one such visit, Queen Victoria writes in her journal how she and Princess Helena drove out to see the people who lived on the estate, including Mrs Simpson. The Queen records: 'Old Mrs Simpson hoped she might live 'another year' to see us again.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 25th October 1865
