Photograph of HMS Hannibal in dry dock being fitted for active service.
The British ship is being prepared to leave for the Black Sea. At the time, a Russian force had destroyed part of the Turkish fleet during the Battle of Sinope, precipitating events which led to the outbreak of the Crimean War.
