  • Princess Victoria Eugenie was the only daughter of Prince Henry of Battenburg and Princess Beatrice, and grand-daughter of Queen Victoria. Her father died of fever while serving in South Africa in 1896. She married King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906. On the way back from the wedding ceremony, an assassination attempt was made and Princess Victoria was very nearly killed by the bomb. The royal couple had seven children, of which the eldest and youngest sons inherited haemophilia (Queen Victoria Eugenie was a carrier). In 1931 the Spanish royal family went into exile after hostile elections leading to the declaration of a Republic, first to France and later Italy. During this time, the couple separated and King Alfonso abdicated in favour of his son the Count of Barcelona. Queen Victoria Eugénie died in Lausanne on 15 April in 1969.
