Photograph showing a three-quarters length portrait of Prince Albert Victor (l1864-92) and his fiancee Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (1867-1953), later Queen Mary, standing arm-in-arm facing front. The Princess wears long-sleeved dress trimmed with beads and a butterfly brooch at the neck. Gloves in her right hand.
Prince Albert Victor was the eldest son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. In December 1891 his engagement to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck was announced, with a wedding planned for 27 February 1892. Only a few weeks before the marriage, however, Prince Albert Victor fell ill with pneumonia and died on 14 January. Princess Victoria Mary later became engaged to his brother, Prince George, the Duke of York, whom she married on 6 July 1893. -
