Photograph of the Prince of Wales (1841-1910), later King Edward VII, with his Samoyed dog. The Prince is sitting in a wicker chair facing partly left and is wearing Highland dress. He is holding a cigar in his right hand and a walking cane in his left hand. The dog is lying on the ground beside him.

The dog was a gift from the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1886. This photograph was subsequently used as the basis of a painting to celebrate the Prince and Princess of Wales's silver wedding anniversary in 1888. The couple became quite attached to the breed and acquired several others.
