Photograph of a three-quarter length portrait of Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900) standing, facing towards the camera. He leans on a plinth draped with cloth. He rests his cheek on his right hand. He wears a leopard skin tunic, gathered at the waist, over a light coloured shirt. He wears a wreath of grapes on his head. Prince Alfred is dressed as the embodiment of Autumn for the Tableaux of the Seasons, performed at Windsor Castle.
To mark their parents 14th wedding anniversary, a series of tableaux were performed at Windsor Castle by the seven eldest children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Prince Alfred performed as 'Autumn' wearing a leopard skin tunic. In other photographs taken during the same occasion, Prince Alfred holds a goblet as a symbol of Bacchus. Real foliage was introduced to the sets and music was performed between each performance.Provenance
