Photograph of a full length portrait of Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78) reclining, facing towards the camera and gazing to the right. She leans her head on her right hand. She wears flowers in her hair. Princess Alice is dressed as the embodiment of Spring for a Tableaux of the Seasons.
To mark Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's fourteenth wedding anniversary, a series of five tableaux, with four representative of the seasons, were performed by their children in the Rubens Room in Windsor Castle on 10 February 1854. In this photograph, Princess Alice is dressed as the representation of Spring and wears a garland of flowers in her hair.Provenance
