One panel from a set of Flemish tapestries depicting the story of Tobit, taken from the Book of Tobit in the Apocrypha. The scene illustrates Tobit in chains led into captivity by mounted soldiers of Shalmanezer, King of Assyria, his wife Anna and son Tobias beside him. Set in a landscape with soldiers and horses, with a border of the four elements. Probably woven in an Oudenaarde workshop. One of four panels from this series in the Royal Collection; RCIN 28108 hangs in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
The wide border is of a type woven in Brussels, depicting the Four Elements.Provenance
Recorded at the Palace of Holyroodhouse before 1700, hanging in the Marquess of Breadalbane's apartments. Purchased from the Marquess of Breadalbane when he relinquished his apartment at the palace in June 1860.
