Tobit and Anna c. 1625
Woven wool tapestry | 325.0 x 145.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 28108

-
One fragment of a panel from a set of Flemish tapestries depicting the story of Tobit, taken from the Book of Tobit in the Apocrypha. The scene illustrates the moment when Tobit, having been blinded by birds' droppings, hears the bleat of a kid given to his wife Anna by her employers and accuses her of stealing it. Fragments of the original border, with swags of flowers, remain; the spaces are filled with fragments of borders from the History of Diana series. Probably woven in an Oudenaarde workshop. One of four panels from this series in the Royal Collection; RCIN 28132 hangs in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Provenance
Recorded at Palace of Holyroodhouse before 1700, hanging in the Marquess of Breadalbane's apartments. Purchased from the Marquess of Breadalbane when he relinquished his apartment at the palace in June 1860.
