One panel from a series of French tapestries depicting History of Diana, illustrating Diana kneeling before Jupiter, imploring him for perpetual chastity, Minerva, Mars, Venus and Juno on either side. Set in a courtyard of a building to with Salomonic columns. Border of leafy scrolls and framed medallions.Probably woven in Paris at the workshop of the Flemish weavers Francois de la Planche (Franz van der Plancken) of Oudenarde and his brother-in-law Marc de Comans of Antwerp. One of a set of six panels from this series in the Royal Collection. A set of the same series is at the Palacio Real, Madrid.
Provenance
Probably bought in Edinburgh by the merchant John Coupar in 1668 for £90. (See Thomas P. Campbell, Threads of Splendor: Tapestry in the Baroque). Recorded in the Palace of Holyroodhouse inventory of 1685, following the death of Charles II: 'Ane sute of Fyne Bruxells hingings containing seven piece wherein is described the history of Diana'.
