Photograph of a head and shoulder length portrait of Georgina Ward, Countess of Dudley (1846-1929). She faces left, her face captured in profile and her eyes downturned. She wears pearl stud earrings, a pearl necklace and a ruffled blouse.
Georgina was from a Scottish landed family and well-known for her beauty. When she was sixteen she married the 48-year old William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley, who lavished her with many jewels and clothes but would not let her have any involvement of the running of the household. After his death, Georgina became involved in the British Red Cross Society, particularly during the Boer War. She was a friend of Queen Alexandra. Virginia Woolf wrote about Lady Dudley in A Room of One's Own. -
