Georgina was from a Scottish landed family and well-known for her beauty. When she was sixteen she married the 48-year old William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley, who lavished her with many jewels and clothes but would not let her have any involvement of the running of the household. After his death, Georgina became involved in the British Red Cross Society, particularly during the Boer War. She was a friend of Queen Alexandra. Virginia Woolf wrote about Lady Dudley in A Room of One's Own.
